The TAB Phoenix – 100 Days out

With 100 Days until The TAB Phoenix, Glenn Rounds trained speedster Aston Rupee is the current $7 favourite in TAB’s Pre-Noms Phoenix market.

The up-and-coming superstar currently holds a record of 25 starts for 13 wins and 11 placings – only once missing a place when fourth in a heat of the Group 2 Launching Pad series.

Setting tongues wagging with a flying 29.06 victory in Sandown’s Bill Collins Speed Star back in June, he recorded his second Speed Star title with a 29.59 win in the recent Group 3 525m Meadows Speed Star.

Tonight, Aston Rupee annihilated Sandown Park’s track record running an unfathomable 28.790 breaking Hard Style Rico’s track record of 28.909 set in the Melbourne Cup last year.

Speaking on Tuesday, Glenn Rounds noted would likely be his last run in Victoria for a little while.

“We have got our plans in order, and all being well he will be in Adelaide for the match race series on the 23rd of September.

I wish they (the bigger races) were on next week – he’s just going that well – but all of those big races (TAB Topgun, TAB Melbourne Cup & The TAB Phoenix) are going to be on his calendar.

We’ve missed out on the Sydney races (The Vic Peters and the Million Dollar Chase) so the ones at home are well and truly on his schedule.”

Holding a sizzling PB of 29.47 at The Meadows, Rounds noted “if he keeps doing what he is doing now I would be very happy going into the Phoenix.”

Slot speculation is set to ramp up with the slot holders to be announced this Sunday night from 7:30pm on The Meadows’ Facebook page and via

“We haven’t had any (speculative) calls from slot holders yet but I think his owner, Ray Borda, has put in for a (Phoenix) slot so we will have to see”
