Group 1 Glory for Grenfell?

Are there any greyhounds in Australia more deserving of a Group 1 victory than Tiggerlong Tonk?

The son of Dyna Double One and Tiggerlong Dot didn’t get all favours when finishing third in last week’s Group 1 Temlee at The Meadows behind Wow. In December, he finished second behind Tommy Shelby in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Hobart Thousand. In November, he was fourth in the Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup Final behind Hard Style Rico.

The list goes on. Since December 2019, Tiggerlong Tonk has lined up in eight Group 1 finals, and while he has tasted success at both Group 2 and Group 3 level, he has yet to break through for his maiden Group 1 win.

That could all change very soon, however, if he makes it through to this year’s TAB Australian Cup Final.

On Saturday night, Tiggerlong Tonk will line up in the first TAB Australian Cup Heat, where he has drawn Box 3.

“He’s been knocking on the door to get the Group 1 win, but he was always getting beaten by Simon Told Helen, so hopefully he’ll get his chance now!” says trainer Correy Grenfell.

“He was a bit unlucky last week – my other dog Yozo Bale punched up and stole his run. Out of the boxes, I thought he was a good thing, but that’s dog racing!

“He’s come through it well, and he’s ready for this week. It doesn’t look like there’s a lot of speed drawn inside him, so hopefully he’ll be able to get to the rail and control the race from there.”

In Race 11, Grenfell has Yozo Bale lining up in the last of the Australian Cup heats. The talented chaser won the Group 2 Ballarat Cup Final back in December, and comes into Saturday night off the back of a strong second in last week’s Group 1 Temlee.

“He’d had some injury issues and had been pulling up sore. But since the Ballarat Cup, he hasn’t been pulling up sore. We’ve gotten on top of it, and he’s getting stronger because we’ve been able to get a really good preparation into him.

“To me, he’s probably the dog that is very underrated going into the Australian Cup. He should lead from Box 1 on Saturday night, and then pull away going into the first corner. I’m definitely confident in him from the draw.”
