Tornado back at The Meadows in TopCat heats

Champion stayer Tornado Tears returns to The Meadows to defend his Group 3 TopCat Video crown, drawing box five in the first of two heats over 725 metres this Saturday night.

The son of Fernando Bale and Tears Siam is fresh off yet another Speed Star victory, this time out-running Group 1 winner Rajahastan on a rain-affected Sandown track in 42.12. His last win at The Meadows occurred in the Group-listed Fireball final, where he blew his rivals away to score in a sensational 42.20. Australia’s most popular stayer will start at prohibitive odds on Saturday, despite taking on the likes of front-running half-miler Blue Shadows and Group 1 National Distance finalist Bronelly Jacob.

The second heat is also full of quality, with Sandown Cup winner Rajasthan (box seven) facing off against fellow National Distance finalist Miss Gingin and versatile chaser She Will Bloom. If victorious, Rajahstan will push his prize money to over $300,000 in prizemoney.

The first four past the post in this Saturday’s heats will progress to the $25,000-to-the-winner final, set down for September 28.

The support card on Saturday is also choc-full of quality, with Group 1 Maturity winner Sennachie drawn box five in the night’s Free For All.
