The Robert Britton-trained Tornado Tears has once again reminded the greyhound world of his dominance over the staying trip with a near 10-length win in Saturday night’s Group 3 Destini Fireball Stayers final (725m) at The Meadows.
The son of Fernando Bale and Tears Siam began well from box four, carving out impressive splits of 4.97, 15.98 and 29.44 before stopping the clock at a sensational 42.01 – just .08 outside Space Star’s track record – a greyhound who is a litter brother to Tornado Tears’ dam Tears Siam. Billy’s Bake finished second, while Rockstar Patriot held on for third.
The win was Tornado Tears’ 14th from just 23 starts, pushing his prizemoney past the $368,000 mark, mainly thanks to four Group wins in 2018.
The white and black chaser has now got within two lengths of track records at both Sandown and The Meadows over the staying trip, and has twice broken the track record at Albion Park over 710 metres.
Formely known as the AWM Distance Championship, the race was renamed after Destini Fireball – the only greyhound to win two Group 1 Zoom Top races at the Broadmeadows circuit and a winner of this race himself in 2013.
Tornado Tears wins the Group 3 Destini Fireball Stayers in a flying 42.01.
