Lightly raced star the one to beat in Group 1 Hume Cup

The lightly-raced Brueghelino has stormed into calculations to take out this year’s Group 1 Hume Cup after a brilliant all-the-way 34.32 heat win over 600 metres on Saturday night.

The daughter of Banjo Boy and Easy Baby – a litter that also includes Big Flood – carved out super splits of 8.97 and 22.03 on her way to four-length win over the classy Cardamom (who also qualified for next week’s final) in the fastest heat of the night.

Trained by Des Douch, the black chaser has won nine of her 15 race starts and will exit box seven in the $75,000-to-the-winner final.

Meadows specialist Mystery Ride has come up with box one after winning from the same box in his 34.61 heat win – the 13th time he has saluted at the Broadmeadows circuit.

NSW will be represented by Jason Mackay’s Riley Tokaam (box three), who scored in 34.52, and Where Art Thou (box eight), who powered home to win in 34.66.

Allen Mike and Rockoon will clash for the third time in as many weeks with another one-two finish, with Allen Mike again getting the better of Rockoon to win in 34.40. The classy chasers have drawn boxes five and four, respectively.

Van Ann – who went into her heat with four wins from four starts over the 600-metre trip, put in an eye-catching second behind Riley Tokaam and looks to have drawn beautifully in box two for next week’s final.

The Melbourne Cup eve meeting will also see the running of the Group 3 RSN Silver Bullet for the best eight sprinters who nominate.
