A greyhound clash for the ages will take place at The Meadows on Saturday night when Australia’s premier female chaser Fanta Bale takes on the might of five-time Group winning stayer Burn One Down in the State Distance Final (725m) at The Meadows.
Due to the lack of nominations over the staying journey, Saturday’s race will be the event (without heats) that determines who will represent Victoria in the National Distance Championship at Albion Park on Friday, August 25. The winner will automatically gain a spot in the Grand Final in three weeks time.
Because she is the highest-rated AGRA-rated greyhound in the country, the Robert Britton-trained Fanta Bale has already booked her spot in Queensland’s Group 1 final, regardless of her finishing position this week. If Fanta Bale wins on Saturday, Burn One Down (regardless of where he finishes on the weekend) will qualify as a wildcard for the $75,000-to-the-winner final as he is the second-highest AGRA ranked stayer competing in heats across the country.
If neither of the two stars win, the winner of Saturday’s race and Fanta Bale will represent the Big V up north.
Fanta Bale and Burn One Down last clashed in May, when Fanta Bale became the first greyhound to win the Australian Cup-Sandown Cup double with a stirring victory over Burn One Down, who finished third.
