There is no denying that Lady Toy has had an outstanding 2015, which has seen her secure her place in Saturday night’s first ever Stayers Topgun, a Group 2 invitational race over the 725m at The Meadows boasting $118,000 in prize money.
Having featured in 12 group race finals including victory in the Group 2 McKenna Memorial at Sandown Park, Lady Toy has won a whopping $303,000 in prize money.
However, as exceptional as she has been, owners Jim Psaila and Norma Gost (the latter is training Lady Toy after the greyhound had a stint with Brooke Ennis) can’t help but wonder what might have been if it weren’t for the emergence of champion stayers Space Star and Sweet It Is.
Space Star dominated the group racing scene between February and April this year until injury struck, while Sweet It Is has since taken over as the country’s premier long-distance greyhound.
Lady Toy has run second to Space Star or Sweet It Is five times in Group 1 Finals. If it wasn’t for those two greyhounds she would have earned a net difference of $383,793 which would take her career earnings up to almost $700,000.
Lady Toy has run second to Space Star or Sweet It Is on no less than six occasions, five of which have been in Group 1 finals. Had those two superstars not been around, Lady Toy would have earned a net difference in prize money of $383,793 in those races, which would take her career winnings up to almost $700,000.
Nonetheless, Lady Toy is set to take on Sweet It Is again on Saturday night, where a $75,000 first prize is up for grabs.
“She’s been a bit unlucky because she struck Space Star and Sweet It Is are just about the best stayers you could ever wish to come across,” Psaila said. “I’m happy with box one, but it will take something special to beat Sweet It Is, and I’ll just be happy if Lady Toy can run a place.”
While delighted a the introduction of the Stayers Topgun, which is Australia’s (if not the world’s) richest invitational staying race for greyhounds, Psaila has an idea he thinks would make a fantastic racing concept.
“I’d love to one day see a race where greyhounds compete over the 525m or the 725m, with the final being over 600m. I think it would create a lot of interest, and I’d back the 725m heat winners to win the final,” he said.
The Topgun Stayers is scheduled to run at 8:38pm.
