Lamia Bale ($3.00) is the favourite to win Saturday night’s $355,000 Group 1 ATC Insurance Australian Cup despite being drawn in the once dreaded eight alley.
For years Box 8 was considered a hoodoo over the 525m distance at The Meadows, and while it remains a difficult draw with only 10.3% of races won from the pink draw, it is a different story at Group 1 level.
Five of the past 11 Group 1 races held over 525m at The Meadows have been won by the number eight greyhound, which is a strike rate of 45.45%.
Lamia Bale’s trainer Steve Collins is sceptical about the draw, however.
“It’s going to be hard for her to cross (in front of) the leaders from out wide but she has two group wins to her name so she has shown she can match it with the best greyhounds around,” the Lara trainer said.
Meanwhile, GRV form expert The Watchdog has tipped Lamia Bale to win.
“She is a well deserved favourite. She exploded out of the boxes in her heat, producing a brilliant 4.99sec early sectional when leading all the way, and she’ll be vying for the early lead again in the final,” The Watchdog said.
